What is the Difference between Precious and Semi-Precious Gemstones?

Have you ever heard the terms precious or semi-precious gemstones before?  Wondering which gemstones are which?  The answer is pretty simple really.  All you have to know is which ones are precious because if it isn’t precious, it is semi-precious!

The precious gemstones are diamond, emerald, sapphire and ruby.  The reason these four are called precious isn’t because they are more expensive, even though they usually are. It is because they are less abundant.  The semi-precious stones aren’t always less expensive but again, they usually are.  Although there are hundreds of semi-precious stones, the most common ones are the ones sold most; peridot, blue topaz, amethyst, garnet and citrine.  A lot of times when people refer to semi-precious gemstones they are thinking of these five.

But I think the semi-precious gemstones are fabulous! In addition to the fact a semi-precious gemstone is usually less expensive, they are also available in a wider array of colors and quality than the precious stones because there are so many of them.  There is significantly more variety.  I guess that is why I love them; they are more affordable as a rule, are available in different shades of color and make wonderful color combinations!
